Colorado learner's permit requirements

In Colorado you can apply for a learner's permit at 15. Applicants under 18 usually need a parent or guardian's consent.

Ages 15 to 15½ need a 30-hour driver education course; ages 15½ to 16 can take that course or a 4-hour driver awareness program. Applicants under 16½ also need 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training.

Before the road test, teen drivers must hold the permit for at least 12 months. Supervised driving required: 50 hours, including 10 at night.

The DMV publishes the exact document list: check it before your appointment, especially if you want a REAL ID-compliant card.

Colorado graduated driver licensing (GDL)

After the learner stage and the road test, teens can get a provisional (intermediate) license from age 16.

First year: no driving from midnight to 5 a.m. (with some exceptions). First 6 months: no passengers under 21; next 6 months: no more than one passenger under 21 (exceptions apply).
