Try 5 Arizona permit test questions

- In Arizona, what is the legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit for drivers 21 and over? 0.02% / 0.05% / 0.08% / 0.10%. Answer: 0.08%. As in almost every state, the limit in Arizona is 0.08% for drivers 21 and over; 0.04% for commercial drivers, and zero tolerance under 21.
- A round yellow sign with a black X and two R letters means: Road closed / Railroad crossing ahead / Rest area / Roundabout ahead. Answer: Railroad crossing ahead. This advance warning sign tells you a railroad crossing is ahead: slow down, look and listen, and be ready to stop.
- Two vehicles reach a 4-way stop at the same time. Which one goes first? The one on the left / The one on the right / The larger vehicle / The one going straight. Answer: The one on the right. How the Arizona MVD permit test works
The Arizona knowledge test (the learner's permit test) has 30 multiple-choice questions, and to pass you need 24 correct answers (80%). Every question comes from the official MVD handbook, the Arizona Driver License Manual and Customer Service Guide.
Multiple-choice. Teens 15½ to 17 can take it at home with a parent or guardian supervising through AZ MVD Now (30-minute limit), then get the permit at an MVD or Authorized Third Party office; others test in an office.
Offered in English, Spanish, Arabic, French, German, Italian, Korean, Mandarin, Russian, Tagalog and Vietnamese; a verbal test may be possible if your language is not available.
Arizona learner's permit requirements
In Arizona you can apply for a learner's permit at 15½. Applicants under 18 usually need a parent or guardian's consent.
Not required. An approved driver education program can replace the practice-hours certification, and a school-based course may waive the road test.
Before the road test, teen drivers must hold the permit for at least 6 months. Supervised driving required: 30 hours, including 10 at night, certified by a parent or guardian; an approved driver education program is an alternative.
- Proof of identity and date of birth (such as a birth certificate or passport).
- Your Social Security number, if you have one.
- Proof of Arizona residency.
- A vision screening and the knowledge test.
The MVD publishes the exact document list: check it before your appointment, especially if you want a REAL ID-compliant card.
Arizona graduated driver licensing (GDL)
After the learner stage and the road test, teens can get a provisional (intermediate) license from age 16.
For the first six months: no driving from midnight to 5 a.m. without a licensed parent or guardian beside you (school, work, religious and family-emergency trips excepted), and no more than one passenger under 18 unless they are siblings.
Restrictions end and you hold a full, unrestricted license at 18, provided your record stays clean.
Arizona rules worth knowing for the test
Signs and most rules are the same nationwide, but each state has its own laws — and the MVD test asks about them.
- Arizona's Permit Test @ Home lets teens take the knowledge test online; the parent or guardian, not the teen, must hold the AZ MVD Now account.
- The instruction permit is valid for 12 months, and the supervising driver must be a licensed adult 21 or older seated beside you.
What the Arizona knowledge test covers
Topics follow the chapters of the MVD handbook. These are the ones asked most often:
- Road signs by shape and color (federal MUTCD standard): see the road signs guide.
- Right-of-way at 4-way stops, left turns, crosswalks and for emergency vehicles: right-of-way rules.
- Speed limits in mph and the 3-second following rule: speed guide.
- Alcohol and drugs: the 0.08% BAC limit, zero tolerance under 21 and implied consent.
- Traffic signals and pavement markings, parking, passing, and sharing the road with cyclists, motorcycles and trucks.
How to study for the Arizona permit test
Read the official MVD handbook once cover to cover, then take practice tests by topic to find your weak spots. Once you consistently score above 90%, take a full timed mock exam.
Drill the numbers — ages, distances, speed and BAC limits — they are the most-missed questions. More tips in how to pass the permit test.
