Utah learner's permit requirements

In Utah you can apply for a learner's permit at 15. Applicants under 18 usually need a parent or guardian's consent.

Applicants 15 to 18 must complete an approved driver education course before they can be licensed.

Before the road test, teen drivers must hold the permit for at least 6 months. Supervised driving required: 40 hours, including 10 after sunset, with a parent or legal guardian.

The DLD publishes the exact document list: check it before your appointment, especially if you want a REAL ID-compliant card.

Utah graduated driver licensing (GDL)

After the learner stage and the road test, teens can get a provisional (intermediate) license from age 16.

Drivers under 18 may not drive between midnight and 5 a.m. unless a licensed driver 21+ is with them or for work, school activities, farm work or emergencies. For the first six months (or until 18) they may not carry non-family passengers unless a licensed driver 21+ is in the front seat.

Restrictions end and you hold a full, unrestricted license at 18, provided your record stays clean.
