Try 5 Wyoming permit test questions
- In Wyoming, what is the legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit for drivers 21 and over? 0.02% / 0.05% / 0.08% / 0.10%. Answer: 0.08%. As in almost every state, the limit in Wyoming is 0.08% for drivers 21 and over; 0.04% for commercial drivers, and zero tolerance under 21.
- A round yellow sign with a black X and two R letters means: Road closed / Railroad crossing ahead / Rest area / Roundabout ahead. Answer: Railroad crossing ahead. This advance warning sign tells you a railroad crossing is ahead: slow down, look and listen, and be ready to stop.
- Two vehicles reach a 4-way stop at the same time. Which one goes first? The one on the left / The one on the right / The larger vehicle / The one going straight. Answer: The one on the right. At an all-way stop, the first to stop goes first. If two vehicles arrive together, the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right.
- What is the minimum safe following distance in good conditions? 1 second / 2 car lengths / 3 seconds / 100 feet. Answer: 3 seconds. Keep at least 3 seconds behind the vehicle ahead, and more in rain, at night, or behind trucks and motorcycles.
- Under implied consent laws, if you refuse a chemical (breath or blood) test after a lawful arrest: Nothing happens / Your license is usually suspended / You only get a warning / You can drive home if you wait an hour. Answer: Your license is usually suspended. By driving, you agree to chemical testing when lawfully asked. Refusing usually leads to an automatic license suspension, separate from any DUI charge.
How the Wyoming WYDOT permit test works
The Wyoming knowledge test is a multiple-choice exam based on the official WYDOT handbook, the Wyoming Driver License Manual (Rules of the Road). To pass you need at least 80%.
The test covers the license class you are applying for, plus Wyoming laws such as seat belt use.
Taken on WYDOT's automated testing system at a driver license office, together with a vision screening, when you apply for the permit.
If you fail, you may take the same written test no more than twice in one day.
Given in English only; non-English speakers may use an interpreter for non-commercial written tests.
Wyoming learner's permit requirements
In Wyoming you can apply for a learner's permit at 15. Applicants under 18 usually need a parent or guardian's consent.
Not required for the permit or intermediate permit, but drivers under 17 need an approved driver education course to get full privileges.
Before the road test, teen drivers must hold the permit for at least 10 days. Supervised driving required: 50 hours, including 10 at night, certified by a parent or guardian (drivers under 18).
- Proof of identity and date of birth (such as a birth certificate or passport).
- Your Social Security number, if you have one.
- Proof of Wyoming residency.
- A vision screening and the knowledge test.
The WYDOT publishes the exact document list: check it before your appointment, especially if you want a REAL ID-compliant card.
Wyoming graduated driver licensing (GDL)
After the learner stage and the road test, teens can get a provisional (intermediate) license from age 16.
Intermediate permit: driving only from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. (signed exceptions for work, school, religious and medical needs) and no more than one passenger under 18 outside the family, unless a fully licensed adult 18+ is in the front seat. Full privileges come after 6 months with driver education, otherwise at 17.
Restrictions end and you hold a full, unrestricted license at 16½, provided your record stays clean.
Wyoming rules worth knowing for the test
Signs and most rules are the same nationwide, but each state has its own laws — and the WYDOT test asks about them.
- You need to hold the learner's permit for only 10 days before applying for the intermediate permit at 16.
- A permit holder may drive only with a licensed person over 18 in the front passenger seat.
- A restricted 'hardship' permit is available to some 14- and 15-year-olds.
What the Wyoming knowledge test covers
Topics follow the chapters of the WYDOT handbook. These are the ones asked most often:
- Road signs by shape and color (federal MUTCD standard): see the road signs guide.
- Right-of-way at 4-way stops, left turns, crosswalks and for emergency vehicles: right-of-way rules.
- Speed limits in mph and the 3-second following rule: speed guide.
- Alcohol and drugs: the 0.08% BAC limit, zero tolerance under 21 and implied consent.
- Traffic signals and pavement markings, parking, passing, and sharing the road with cyclists, motorcycles and trucks.
