How the Montana MVD permit test works
The Montana knowledge test is a multiple-choice exam based on the official MVD handbook, the Montana Driver Manual.
The written and vision tests are taken at an MVD driver exam station by appointment; applicants under 18 need a consent form signed by a parent, guardian or responsible adult.
Montana learner's permit requirements
In Montana you can apply for a learner's permit at 14½. Applicants under 18 usually need a parent or guardian's consent.
To get a learner license before 16, teens must be enrolled in or have completed a state-approved traffic education course; online and third-party courses are not approved.
Before the road test, teen drivers must hold the permit for at least 6 months. Supervised driving required: 50 hours, including 10 at night.
- Proof of identity and date of birth (such as a birth certificate or passport).
- Your Social Security number, if you have one.
- Proof of Montana residency.
- A vision screening and the knowledge test.
The MVD publishes the exact document list: check it before your appointment, especially if you want a REAL ID-compliant card.
Montana graduated driver licensing (GDL)
After the learner stage and the road test, teens can get a provisional (intermediate) license from age 15.
For the first year or until age 18, no driving from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. except for work, school, religious or farm activities or with a licensed adult. Only one passenger under 18 (other than family) is allowed in the first 6 months and three in months 7 to 12, unless a licensed adult supervises.
Montana rules worth knowing for the test
Signs and most rules are the same nationwide, but each state has its own laws — and the MVD test asks about them.
- Montana can issue a learner license at 14½, but only to teens enrolled in or done with a state-approved traffic education program; without it, teens generally wait until 16.
- During the first year, every person in the vehicle must wear a seat belt, and there cannot be more occupants than seat belts.
- Breaking the first-year rules brings 20 to 60 hours of community service on a first conviction and a 6-month suspension on a later one.
- The learner license is valid for one year from the date it is issued.
What the Montana knowledge test covers
Topics follow the chapters of the MVD handbook. These are the ones asked most often:
- Road signs by shape and color (federal MUTCD standard): see the road signs guide.
- Right-of-way at 4-way stops, left turns, crosswalks and for emergency vehicles: right-of-way rules.
- Speed limits in mph and the 3-second following rule: speed guide.
- Alcohol and drugs: the 0.08% BAC limit, zero tolerance under 21 and implied consent.
- Traffic signals and pavement markings, parking, passing, and sharing the road with cyclists, motorcycles and trucks.
How to study for the Montana permit test
