Idaho learner's permit requirements
In Idaho you can apply for a learner's permit at 14½. Applicants under 18 usually need a parent or guardian's consent.
Applicants under 17 must pass an approved driver training program: 30 hours of classroom instruction, 6 hours behind the wheel and 6 hours of in-car observation with a licensed instructor.
Before the road test, teen drivers must hold the permit for at least 6 months. Supervised driving required: 50 hours, including 10 at night.
- Proof of identity and date of birth (such as a birth certificate or passport).
- Your Social Security number, if you have one.
- Proof of Idaho residency.
- A vision screening and the knowledge test.
The DMV publishes the exact document list: check it before your appointment, especially if you want a REAL ID-compliant card.
Idaho graduated driver licensing (GDL)
After the learner stage and the road test, teens can get a provisional (intermediate) license from age 15.
Drivers under 16 may drive only between 5 a.m. and 10 p.m. unless a licensed driver 21 or older sits beside them. For the first six months, drivers under 17 may carry no more than one passenger under 17 who is not a relative.
Restrictions end and you hold a full, unrestricted license at 17, provided your record stays clean.
Idaho rules worth knowing for the test
Signs and most rules are the same nationwide, but each state has its own laws — and the DMV test asks about them.
- Permit drivers must have a licensed supervisor at least 21 in the seat beside them, and no other passengers may ride in the front seat.
- A conviction or restriction violation cancels the permit, and the six-month supervised driving period starts over with the new permit.
- ITD allows a translator for the knowledge test if your language is not offered, or after three failed attempts in an offered language.
What the Idaho knowledge test covers
Topics follow the chapters of the DMV handbook. These are the ones asked most often:
