- In Oregon, what is the legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit for drivers 21 and over? 0.02% / 0.05% / 0.08% / 0.10%. Answer: 0.08%. As in almost every state, the limit in Oregon is 0.08% for drivers 21 and over; 0.04% for commercial drivers, and zero tolerance under 21.
- Two vehicles reach a 4-way stop at the same time. Which one goes first? The one on the left / The one on the right / The larger vehicle / The one going straight. Answer: The one on the right. Answer: Your license is usually suspended. By driving, you agree to chemical testing when lawfully asked. Refusing usually leads to an automatic license suspension, separate from any DUI charge.
How the Oregon DMV permit test works
The Oregon knowledge test (the learner's permit test) has 35 multiple-choice questions, and to pass you need 28 correct answers (80%). Every question comes from the official DMV handbook, the Oregon Driver Manual.
Multiple choice, taken online through DMV2U on a computer with a webcam (under 18 requires a proctor 21 or older) or at a DMV office.
After a failed test you may test twice within 24 hours. You can test online four times in total; after that you must test at a DMV office.
Offered online and at DMV offices in English, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese (simplified Mandarin), Japanese, Korean, Russian and Vietnamese.
Oregon learner's permit requirements
In Oregon you can apply for a learner's permit at 15. Applicants under 18 usually need a parent or guardian's consent.
Driver education is optional for teens, but an ODOT-approved course cuts the required practice to 50 hours and DMV may waive the drive test.
Before the road test, teen drivers must hold the permit for at least 6 months. Supervised driving required: 100 hours of supervised driving, or 50 hours if you complete an ODOT-approved driver education course.
- Proof of identity and date of birth (such as a birth certificate or passport).
- Your Social Security number, if you have one.
- Proof of Oregon residency.
- A vision screening and the knowledge test.
The DMV publishes the exact document list: check it before your appointment, especially if you want a REAL ID-compliant card.
Oregon graduated driver licensing (GDL)
After the learner stage and the road test, teens can get a provisional (intermediate) license from age 16.
No driving from midnight to 5 a.m. (with exceptions). No passengers under 20 outside immediate family for the first 6 months, then at most 3 for the next 6 months. Limits end at 18 or after 1 year, whichever comes first.
Restrictions end and you hold a full, unrestricted license at 18, provided your record stays clean.
Oregon rules worth knowing for the test
Signs and most rules are the same nationwide, but each state has its own laws — and the DMV test asks about them.
- Drivers under 18 may not use a mobile electronic device at all while driving, even hands-free; adults may not hold and use one.
- Teens can take the permit knowledge test online at home, as long as an adult 21 or older proctors it.
- Applicants under 18 need a parent's or guardian's signature certifying school enrollment, or proof of graduation or a GED.
What the Oregon knowledge test covers
Topics follow the chapters of the DMV handbook. These are the ones asked most often:
- Road signs by shape and color (federal MUTCD standard): see the road signs guide.
- Right-of-way at 4-way stops, left turns, crosswalks and for emergency vehicles: right-of-way rules.
- Speed limits in mph and the 3-second following rule: speed guide.
- Alcohol and drugs: the 0.08% BAC limit, zero tolerance under 21 and implied consent.
- Traffic signals and pavement markings, parking, passing, and sharing the road with cyclists, motorcycles and trucks.
How to study for the Oregon permit test
Read the official DMV handbook once cover to cover, then take practice tests by topic to find your weak spots. Once you consistently score above 90%, take a full timed mock exam.
Drill the numbers — ages, distances, speed and BAC limits — they are the most-missed questions. More tips in how to pass the permit test.
