How the Kansas DMV permit test works
The Kansas knowledge test (the learner's permit test) has 25 multiple-choice questions. Every question comes from the official DMV handbook, the Kansas Driving Handbook.
The 25 questions cover Kansas traffic laws and the identification of road signs.
The written exam can be taken online at any hour through the Division of Vehicles' web-based exam, or in person at a driver's license office.
The Kansas Driving Handbook says applicants get four chances to pass the written test.
Kansas learner's permit requirements
In Kansas you can apply for a learner's permit at 14. Applicants under 18 usually need a parent or guardian's consent.
An approved driver education course is required for the restricted license at 15. At 16, completing driver education can replace the state's written and driving tests.
Before the road test, teen drivers must hold the permit for at least 1 year. Supervised driving required: 50 hours, including 10 at night, certified by a parent or guardian (25 hours are needed before the restricted license at 15).
- Proof of identity and date of birth (such as a birth certificate or passport).
- Your Social Security number, if you have one.
- Proof of Kansas residency.
- A vision screening and the knowledge test.
The DMV publishes the exact document list: check it before your appointment, especially if you want a REAL ID-compliant card.
Kansas graduated driver licensing (GDL)
After the learner stage and the road test, teens can get a provisional (intermediate) license from age 15.
At 15, teens may drive only to and from school or work, or with a licensed adult in the front seat, with no non-sibling minor passengers and no phone use except to report an emergency. At 16, driving is allowed from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. and anytime to or from work, school activities or religious services, with at most one non-family passenger under 18 for the first 6 months.
Restrictions end and you hold a full, unrestricted license at 17, provided your record stays clean.
Kansas rules worth knowing for the test
Signs and most rules are the same nationwide, but each state has its own laws — and the DMV test asks about them.
- Kansas lets new drivers take the written knowledge exam online from a computer instead of at a driver's license office.
- An instruction permit is available from age 14, but applicants under 16 need a written application from a parent or guardian.
- Teens under 17 must hold the instruction permit for one year or until their 17th birthday, whichever comes first.
- The Division of Vehicles also publishes the driving handbook in Spanish.
What the Kansas knowledge test covers
Topics follow the chapters of the DMV handbook. These are the ones asked most often:
- Road signs by shape and color (federal MUTCD standard): see the road signs guide.
- Right-of-way at 4-way stops, left turns, crosswalks and for emergency vehicles: right-of-way rules.
- Speed limits in mph and the 3-second following rule: speed guide.
- Alcohol and drugs: the 0.08% BAC limit, zero tolerance under 21 and implied consent.
- Traffic signals and pavement markings, parking, passing, and sharing the road with cyclists, motorcycles and trucks.
How to study for the Kansas permit test
Read the official DMV handbook once cover to cover, then take practice tests by topic to find your weak spots. Once you consistently score above 90%, take a full timed mock exam.
Drill the numbers — ages, distances, speed and BAC limits — they are the most-missed questions. More tips in how to pass the permit test.
