Oklahoma learner's permit requirements
In Oklahoma you can apply for a learner's permit at 15. Applicants under 18 usually need a parent or guardian's consent.
At 15, you must be enrolled in an approved driver education course to get a permit; from 16 it is optional, but completing it lets you get the intermediate license and unrestricted license sooner. The free Oklahoma Work Zone Safe course is required for an intermediate license under 18.
Before the road test, teen drivers must hold the permit for at least 180 days. Supervised driving required: 50 hours, including 10 at night, with a licensed driver at least 21 years old.
- Proof of identity and date of birth (such as a birth certificate or passport).
- Your Social Security number, if you have one.
- Proof of Oklahoma residency.
- A vision screening and the knowledge test.
The SOK publishes the exact document list: check it before your appointment, especially if you want a REAL ID-compliant card.
Oklahoma graduated driver licensing (GDL)
After the learner stage and the road test, teens can get a provisional (intermediate) license from age 16.
Intermediate drivers may drive only from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. unless going to or from school, church or work, or with a licensed driver 21 or older in the front seat. Only one passenger (or household members only) unless that adult is present.
Restrictions end and you hold a full, unrestricted license at 16½, provided your record stays clean.
Oklahoma rules worth knowing for the test
Signs and most rules are the same nationwide, but each state has its own laws — and the SOK test asks about them.
- The intermediate license is available at 16 with driver education or at 16½ without it, after holding the learner permit for 180 days.
- The unrestricted license requires holding the intermediate license for 6 months with driver education (minimum age 16½) or 1 year without it (minimum age 17), with a clean driving record.
- Teens must complete the free Oklahoma Work Zone Safe course before getting an intermediate license.
What the Oklahoma knowledge test covers
Topics follow the chapters of the SOK handbook. These are the ones asked most often:
- Road signs by shape and color (federal MUTCD standard): see the road signs guide.
- Right-of-way at 4-way stops, left turns, crosswalks and for emergency vehicles: right-of-way rules.
- Speed limits in mph and the 3-second following rule: speed guide.
- Alcohol and drugs: the 0.08% BAC limit, zero tolerance under 21 and implied consent.
- Traffic signals and pavement markings, parking, passing, and sharing the road with cyclists, motorcycles and trucks.
How to study for the Oklahoma permit test
Read the official SOK handbook once cover to cover, then take practice tests by topic to find your weak spots. Once you consistently score above 90%, take a full timed mock exam.
Drill the numbers — ages, distances, speed and BAC limits — they are the most-missed questions. More tips in how to pass the permit test.
