How the Texas DPS permit test works
The Texas knowledge test is a multiple-choice exam based on the official DPS handbook, the Texas Driver Handbook.
Teens usually take the knowledge exam during their driver education course; otherwise it is taken at a DPS driver license office.
Offered only in English or Spanish, and you must understand road signs written in English. A translator may help only before and after the test.
Texas learner's permit requirements
In Texas you can apply for a learner's permit at 15. Applicants under 18 usually need a parent or guardian's consent.
Teens 15 to 17 need an approved driver education course (at least the first 6 classroom hours to get a learner license) and the Impact Texas Teen Driver program; adults 18 to 24 need a 6-hour adult driver education course.
Before the road test, teen drivers must hold the permit for at least 6 months. Supervised driving required: 30 hours, including 10 at night, with a licensed driver 21 or older.
- Proof of identity and date of birth (such as a birth certificate or passport).
- Your Social Security number, if you have one.
- Proof of Texas residency.
- A vision screening and the knowledge test.
The DPS publishes the exact document list: check it before your appointment, especially if you want a REAL ID-compliant card.
Texas graduated driver licensing (GDL)
After the learner stage and the road test, teens can get a provisional (intermediate) license from age 16.
Provisional drivers under 18 may not carry more than one passenger under 21 who is not a family member and may not drive between midnight and 5 a.m. except for work, school activities or emergencies.
Restrictions end and you hold a full, unrestricted license at 18, provided your record stays clean.
Texas rules worth knowing for the test
Signs and most rules are the same nationwide, but each state has its own laws — and the DPS test asks about them.
- Provisional license holders under 18 may not use any wireless communication device while driving, even hands-free.
- A learner license must be held for at least six months, or until age 18, before moving to a provisional license.
- Teens must complete the Impact Texas Teen Driver program within 90 days before taking the driving test.
- First-time applicants 25 and older do not have to take a driver education course.
What the Texas knowledge test covers
Topics follow the chapters of the DPS handbook. These are the ones asked most often:
- Road signs by shape and color (federal MUTCD standard): see the road signs guide.
- Right-of-way at 4-way stops, left turns, crosswalks and for emergency vehicles: right-of-way rules.
- Speed limits in mph and the 3-second following rule: speed guide.
- Alcohol and drugs: the 0.08% BAC limit, zero tolerance under 21 and implied consent.
- Traffic signals and pavement markings, parking, passing, and sharing the road with cyclists, motorcycles and trucks.
How to study for the Texas permit test
Read the official DPS handbook once cover to cover, then take practice tests by topic to find your weak spots. Once you consistently score above 90%, take a full timed mock exam.
Drill the numbers — ages, distances, speed and BAC limits — they are the most-missed questions. More tips in how to pass the permit test.
