The Railroad Advance Warning Sign: Tracks Ahead
The round yellow sign with a black X and two R letters warns that a railroad crossing is ahead. Slow down, turn down the radio, look and listen for trains in both directions, and be ready to stop before the tracks. It is the only round warning sign in the United States, so learn its shape: it is a frequent permit test question.

Railroad advance warning quiz: 3 test-style questions
- A round yellow sign with a black X and the letters R R means: Railroad crossing ahead / Road repairs ahead / Rest area on the right / Rough road. Answer: Railroad crossing ahead. The circular W10-1 sign is the advance warning for a highway-rail grade crossing.
- What shape is used only for the railroad advance warning sign? Pentagon / Circle / Pennant / Octagon. Answer: Circle. The circle is reserved for the railroad advance warning sign. Other warnings are mostly diamonds.
- After passing a railroad advance warning sign, you should: Speed up to cross before a train comes / Change lanes to pass slower vehicles before the tracks / Slow down, look and listen, and be ready to stop / Stop immediately at the sign. Answer: Slow down, look and listen, and be ready to stop. The sign gives you time to slow down and check for trains. You stop at the crossing, not at the warning sign, if a train is coming or signals are active.
What the railroad advance warning sign means
The railroad advance warning sign (MUTCD W10-1) is a yellow circle with a black border, a black X and two letters R. It is a warning sign: it does not order you to stop, but it tells you a highway-rail grade crossing is coming, usually a few hundred feet ahead depending on the road's speed. Its job is to give you time to slow down and prepare.
It is the only circular warning sign. Yellow means warning; the circle means railroad. At the crossing itself you will find the white crossbuck, sometimes with flashing lights, gates, or a STOP or YIELD sign. Pavement markings often reinforce the warning: a large white X with the letters RXR, a no-passing line and a stop line.
What to do after the sign
- Slow down and stop passing other vehicles.
- Turn down the radio, and consider lowering the window, so you can hear a horn or bell.
- Look both ways along the tracks as early as you can see them.
- Be ready to stop 15 to 50 feet from the nearest rail if a train is coming, lights flash or gates are down.
- Watch the vehicles ahead: school buses and many trucks stop at every crossing.
- Check the space beyond the tracks before you cross, so you will not be trapped on them by traffic.
Common mistakes and test traps
- Advance warning vs crossbuck. The round yellow sign is before the crossing; the white X crossbuck is at the tracks.
- It is not an order to stop. You stop at the crossing when required, not at the warning sign.
- Diamond railroad signs. Yellow diamonds showing tracks crossing a side road (W10-2, W10-3, W10-4) warn that a crossing is just past an upcoming intersection, so a turn may put you on tracks right away.
- No passing. Most states prohibit passing within 100 feet of a railroad crossing; the warning zone is no place to overtake.
Where you see it
You see the W10-1 sign on the approach to most public railroad crossings, on rural roads and city streets alike. On low-speed urban streets with crossings very close to intersections, it may be omitted or replaced by a side-road crossing sign. Some crossings add warning plaques such as LOOK, NO TRAIN HORN or LOW GROUND CLEARANCE, which matters for trailers and low vehicles that could get stuck on a humped crossing.

Railroad advance warning sign FAQ
What does the round RR sign mean?

The MUTCD reserves the circle for railroad advance warning, so drivers can recognize it at a glance, even from the back.
