How the Florida FLHSMV permit test works
The Florida knowledge test (the learner's permit test) has 50 multiple-choice questions, and to pass you need 40 correct answers out of 50 (80%). Every question comes from the official FLHSMV handbook, the Florida Class E Driver License Handbook.
Multiple-choice questions on traffic laws, safe driving and traffic controls, taken at a state or tax collector driver license office. Applicants under 18 may take it online through an approved provider, with a parent or guardian as proctor.
Through an approved online provider you get up to three attempts; after three failures, the exam must be taken at a driver license office.
Since February 6, 2026, all Florida driver license knowledge and skills exams are given in English only, without interpreters.
Florida learner's permit requirements
In Florida you can apply for a learner's permit at 15. Applicants under 18 usually need a parent or guardian's consent.
Anyone who has never held a license must complete the Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course, online or in a classroom, before applying.
Before the road test, teen drivers must hold the permit for at least 12 months. Supervised driving required: 50 hours, including 10 at night, certified by a parent, guardian or responsible adult 21 or older (teens under 18).
- Proof of identity and date of birth (such as a birth certificate or passport).
- Your Social Security number, if you have one.
- Proof of Florida residency.
- A vision screening and the knowledge test.
The FLHSMV publishes the exact document list: check it before your appointment, especially if you want a REAL ID-compliant card.
Florida graduated driver licensing (GDL)
After the learner stage and the road test, teens can get a provisional (intermediate) license from age 16.
At 16, driving is allowed only from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.; at 17, from 5 a.m. to 1 a.m. Exceptions apply when driving to or from work or with a licensed driver 21 or older.
Restrictions end and you hold a full, unrestricted license at 18, provided your record stays clean.
Florida rules worth knowing for the test
Signs and most rules are the same nationwide, but each state has its own laws — and the FLHSMV test asks about them.
- With a learner's license you may drive only in daylight for the first three months, then until 10 p.m., always with a licensed driver 21 or older in the front passenger seat.
- Florida's Move Over law also covers disabled vehicles with hazard lights on; if you cannot change lanes safely, slow to 20 mph below the posted limit.
- Texting while driving is a primary offense, and holding a wireless device is banned in school zones and active work zones.
- To move to a driver license before 18, you need the 12-month learner period with no moving violation convictions.
What the Florida knowledge test covers
Topics follow the chapters of the FLHSMV handbook. These are the ones asked most often:
- Road signs by shape and color (federal MUTCD standard): see the road signs guide.
- Right-of-way at 4-way stops, left turns, crosswalks and for emergency vehicles: right-of-way rules.
- Speed limits in mph and the 3-second following rule: speed guide.
- Alcohol and drugs: the 0.08% BAC limit, zero tolerance under 21 and implied consent.
- Traffic signals and pavement markings, parking, passing, and sharing the road with cyclists, motorcycles and trucks.
How to study for the Florida permit test
Read the official FLHSMV handbook once cover to cover, then take practice tests by topic to find your weak spots. Once you consistently score above 90%, take a full timed mock exam.
Drill the numbers — ages, distances, speed and BAC limits — they are the most-missed questions. More tips in how to pass the permit test.
