How the Alabama ALEA permit test works
The Alabama knowledge test is a multiple-choice exam based on the official ALEA handbook, the Alabama Driver Manual (November 2024).
The knowledge test covers Alabama traffic laws, road signs and safe-driving rules from the Alabama Driver Manual.
Offered in English, and also in Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish, Thai and Vietnamese.
Alabama learner's permit requirements
In Alabama you can apply for a learner's permit at 15. Applicants under 18 usually need a parent or guardian's consent.
Not required. A driver education course approved by the State Department of Education can be used instead of the 50-hour practice form.
Before the road test, teen drivers must hold the permit for at least 6 months. Supervised driving required: 50 hours of behind-the-wheel practice for 16-year-old applicants, unless they complete an approved driver education course.
- Proof of identity and date of birth (such as a birth certificate or passport).
- Your Social Security number, if you have one.
- Proof of Alabama residency.
- A vision screening and the knowledge test.
The ALEA publishes the exact document list: check it before your appointment, especially if you want a REAL ID-compliant card.
Alabama graduated driver licensing (GDL)
After the learner stage and the road test, teens can get a provisional (intermediate) license from age 16.
Stage II drivers may not drive from midnight to 6 a.m. (with exceptions such as a parent present, work, school or religious events, and emergencies), may carry only one passenger besides family members, and may not use handheld devices.
Restrictions end and you hold a full, unrestricted license at 17, provided your record stays clean.
Alabama rules worth knowing for the test
Signs and most rules are the same nationwide, but each state has its own laws — and the ALEA test asks about them.
- A 17-year-old who has held a Stage II license for at least six months can move to an unrestricted license; applicants 18 and older skip the first two stages once they pass the road test.
- Breaking a graduated-license rule extends the restricted period by six months or until age 18.
- Alabama's hands-free law took effect in June 2024: holding a phone is a violation when the driver also swerves, changes lanes without signaling or otherwise drives improperly.
What the Alabama knowledge test covers
Topics follow the chapters of the ALEA handbook. These are the ones asked most often:
- Road signs by shape and color (federal MUTCD standard): see the road signs guide.
- Right-of-way at 4-way stops, left turns, crosswalks and for emergency vehicles: right-of-way rules.
- Speed limits in mph and the 3-second following rule: speed guide.
- Alcohol and drugs: the 0.08% BAC limit, zero tolerance under 21 and implied consent.
- Traffic signals and pavement markings, parking, passing, and sharing the road with cyclists, motorcycles and trucks.
