The Georgia knowledge test (the learner's permit test) has 40 multiple-choice questions, and to pass you need 15 correct answers out of 20 on each part (75%). Every question comes from the official DDS handbook, the Georgia Drivers Manual.
The knowledge exam has two parts: a 20-question road rules test and a 20-question road signs test.
Taken on a walk-in basis at a DDS Customer Service Center; you must start the test at least 30 minutes before the center closes.
After a first failure you can retake the failed part the next day; after a second or later failure you must wait seven days.
The road rules test is offered in English and several other languages, including Spanish; DDS gives the road signs test in English only.
Georgia learner's permit requirements
In Georgia you can apply for a learner's permit at 15. Applicants under 18 usually need a parent or guardian's consent.
Under Joshua's Law, a Class D license at 16 requires a DDS-approved driver education course (30 hours of classroom or online instruction plus 6 hours behind the wheel with an instructor, or the DDS Parent/Teen Driving Guide). All 16- and 17-year-olds must also complete the Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program (ADAP).
Before the road test, teen drivers must hold the permit for at least 1 year and 1 day. Supervised driving required: 40 hours, including 6 at night, certified at the time of the license application.
- Proof of identity and date of birth (such as a birth certificate or passport).
- Your Social Security number, if you have one.
- Proof of Georgia residency.
- A vision screening and the knowledge test.
The DDS publishes the exact document list: check it before your appointment, especially if you want a REAL ID-compliant card.
Georgia graduated driver licensing (GDL)
After the learner stage and the road test, teens can get a provisional (intermediate) license from age 16.
Class D drivers may not drive from midnight to 5 a.m., with no exceptions. For the first 6 months only immediate family may ride along; for the next 6 months, no more than one non-family passenger under 21; after that, no more than three.
Restrictions end and you hold a full, unrestricted license at 18, provided your record stays clean.
Georgia rules worth knowing for the test
Signs and most rules are the same nationwide, but each state has its own laws — and the DDS test asks about them.
- Georgia's Hands-Free law bars every driver, of any age, from holding or supporting a phone while driving; texting is not allowed even with a hands-free device, though voice-to-text is.
- Permit holders may drive only with a licensed Class C driver who is at least 21 sitting beside them.
- Class D limits follow the license, not your age: they stay in place until you upgrade to a Class C license, which you can request online starting on your 18th birthday.
What the Georgia knowledge test covers
Topics follow the chapters of the DDS handbook. These are the ones asked most often:
- Road signs by shape and color (federal MUTCD standard): see the road signs guide.
- Right-of-way at 4-way stops, left turns, crosswalks and for emergency vehicles: right-of-way rules.
- Speed limits in mph and the 3-second following rule: speed guide.
- Alcohol and drugs: the 0.08% BAC limit, zero tolerance under 21 and implied consent.
- Traffic signals and pavement markings, parking, passing, and sharing the road with cyclists, motorcycles and trucks.
How to study for the Georgia permit test

Drill the numbers — ages, distances, speed and BAC limits — they are the most-missed questions. More tips in how to pass the permit test.
