How the South Carolina DMV permit test works

The South Carolina knowledge test is a multiple-choice exam based on the official DMV handbook, the South Carolina Driver's Manual.

The vision and knowledge tests are given at any SCDMV branch, and approved third-party testers can also give them for a first-time Class D beginner's permit. Manuals, phones, tablets and other devices are not allowed in the test area.

South Carolina learner's permit requirements

In South Carolina you can apply for a learner's permit at 15. Applicants under 18 usually need a parent or guardian's consent.

Teens must complete a driver's education course (8 hours of classroom and 6 hours of driving) before getting a conditional or special restricted license.

Before the road test, teen drivers must hold the permit for at least 180 days. Supervised driving required: 40 hours, including 10 at night.

The DMV publishes the exact document list: check it before your appointment, especially if you want a REAL ID-compliant card.

South Carolina graduated driver licensing (GDL)

After the learner stage and the road test, teens can get a provisional (intermediate) license from age 15½.

Conditional and special restricted drivers may drive alone from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. (8 p.m. during daylight saving time), need a licensed adult 21 or older until midnight, and need a qualified supervisor after midnight. They may carry no more than two passengers under 21 unless a licensed adult 21+ is along, except family members or students going to or from school.

Restrictions end and you hold a full, unrestricted license at 17, provided your record stays clean.
