Stop Ahead Sign: Prepare to Stop at the Next Intersection (MUTCD W3-1)

Stop ahead quiz: 3 test-style questions

  1. A yellow diamond sign shows a red octagon above an arrow. It means: Stop immediately at this sign / There is a stop sign ahead; prepare to stop / The road ends ahead / A school bus may be stopped ahead. Answer: There is a stop sign ahead; prepare to stop. The stop ahead sign is a warning. You do not stop at the sign itself; you prepare to stop at the stop sign ahead.
  2. At a stop sign with a marked stop line, where must you stop? Just past the stop line so you can see / In the middle of the crosswalk / Before the stop line / Anywhere near the intersection. Answer: Before the stop line. Stop before the stop line. If there is none, stop before the crosswalk; if there is no crosswalk, stop where you can see cross traffic without entering the intersection.
  3. Why are stop ahead signs placed before some stop signs? Because the stop sign is hard to see in time, for example after a curve or hill / Because you only need to slow down, not stop / Because the stop applies only to trucks / Because the stop sign is temporary. Answer: Because the stop sign is hard to see in time, for example after a curve or hill. Engineers add the advance warning when the stop sign is not visible far enough ahead for a driver to stop comfortably.

What the stop ahead sign means

The Stop Ahead sign (MUTCD W3-1) is a yellow, diamond-shaped warning sign with a red octagon (the shape of a stop sign) and a black arrow pointing toward it. It means a stop sign is ahead and that you may not see it early enough to stop smoothly. It is not a stop sign itself: you do not stop at the yellow sign.

Engineers use it where the stop sign is hidden by a curve, a hill, trees or parked vehicles, or where drivers arrive at high speed after a long stretch with no stops. It may have a distance plaque or, on fast roads, flashing beacons.

What to do, step by step

Test traps

The test checks that you can tell warning signs from regulatory signs. The stop ahead sign is yellow and diamond-shaped, so it is a warning; the red octagon is the regulatory sign that requires the stop. Another trap is the “rolling stop”: slowing down without stopping is a violation and a frequent reason for failing the road test. Your wheels must stop moving completely.

Where you see it

Stop ahead signs are common on rural roads meeting a highway, at the bottom of hills, after sharp curves and wherever a new stop sign was installed. Some states add red flashing lights on top of the stop sign itself or rumble strips in the pavement before it.

The same family includes the signal ahead sign and the yield ahead sign (a yellow diamond with a red triangle). Review the stop sign, the yield sign and the right-of-way rules at stops.

Stop ahead sign FAQ

Do I have to stop at a stop ahead sign?

No. It is a warning sign. You must slow down and prepare to stop at the stop sign that follows.

What is the difference between the stop ahead sign and the stop sign?

The stop ahead sign is a yellow diamond that warns you. The stop sign is a red octagon that legally requires a complete stop.

Where do I stop at a stop sign?

Before the stop line. If there is no line, stop before the crosswalk; if there is no crosswalk, stop at the point nearest the intersection where you can see traffic, without entering it.

Is a rolling stop legal?

No. Every state requires a complete stop at a stop sign. Slowing down without stopping can get you a ticket and fail your road test.
