Slippery When Wet Sign: Avoid Skids on Wet Pavement
The slippery when wet sign is a yellow diamond showing a car with two wavy skid marks behind it. It warns that the road surface ahead becomes especially slippery when wet. In rain, slow down before the area, increase your following distance and avoid sudden braking, steering or acceleration.

Slippery when wet quiz: 3 test-style questions
- When is a road usually most slippery? After several hours of heavy rain / During the first minutes of rain after a dry spell / When the pavement is completely dry / Only at night. Answer: During the first minutes of rain after a dry spell. Rain first mixes with oil and dust on the pavement, creating a greasy film. The road gets safer after the rain washes it away, but it is still slick.
- Your car starts to hydroplane on a wet road. What should you do? Brake hard and turn the wheel sharply / Speed up to regain traction / Ease off the gas, keep the steering wheel straight and avoid hard braking / Turn on cruise control. Answer: Ease off the gas, keep the steering wheel straight and avoid hard braking. Release the accelerator gently and hold the wheel steady until the tires grip again. Sudden braking or steering can cause a spin.
- On wet roads, your following distance should be: The same as on dry roads / Shorter, because everyone drives slower / Longer than the usual 3 seconds / Exactly one car length. Answer: Longer than the usual 3 seconds. Stopping distances increase on wet pavement. Add extra seconds to the normal 3-second following distance.
What the slippery when wet sign means
The Slippery When Wet sign (MUTCD W8-5) is a yellow diamond with a car followed by two S-shaped skid marks. It warns that the pavement ahead loses grip when wet, usually because of a smooth or polished surface, a steep grade, a bridge deck or a spot where water collects. A plaque may add WHEN WET, ICE or another condition.
The sign is permanent: it stays up in dry weather too. It means the danger exists when the road is wet; on a dry day, it is a reminder to adjust if rain starts.
How to drive on slippery pavement
- Slow down before the area. Your tires need grip for both braking and steering; less speed means more margin.
- Increase following distance beyond the usual 3 seconds.
- Brake, steer and accelerate gently. Avoid sudden movements, especially in curves.
- Turn off cruise control on wet roads so you control the speed yourself.
- Drive in the tire tracks of the car ahead if you can, where there is less standing water.
- Turn on your headlights in rain; many states require it whenever your wipers are on.
Hydroplaning happens when a film of water lifts your tires off the road. Worn tires, deep water and higher speed all make it more likely. If it happens, ease off the gas, keep the wheel straight and wait for the tires to grip again.
Common mistakes and test traps
Test questions love the first rain: the road is most slippery in the first minutes of rain, when water mixes with oil on the pavement. Another trap is the skid: if your rear wheels slide, look and steer in the direction you want the car to go, and do not slam the brakes. With anti-lock brakes (ABS), press firmly and hold; do not pump. Remember too that bridges and overpasses freeze before the road in winter.
Where you see it
Look for it on bridges, steel deck surfaces, steep hills, curves with polished pavement, and roads near rivers or the coast. It is a common sign in states with heavy rain, but the advice applies everywhere.

Slippery when wet sign FAQ
What does the slippery when wet sign mean?
It warns that the road surface ahead becomes unusually slippery when wet. Slow down, leave more space and avoid sudden braking or steering.
Why is the road most slippery when it first starts to rain?
Oil, rubber and dust build up on dry pavement. The first rain lifts them into a slick film until heavier rain washes them away.
What is hydroplaning?
It is when a layer of water builds between your tires and the road, so the tires lose contact. Slow down in heavy rain and keep your tires properly inflated and with good tread.
What should I do if my car skids?
Take your foot off the gas, look where you want to go and steer gently in that direction. Avoid slamming the brakes; with ABS, press firmly and hold.
Should I use cruise control in the rain?
No. Turn it off on wet or slippery roads so you can react immediately and control your speed.
