Road work ahead quiz: 3 test-style questions

  1. What color are temporary work zone warning signs? Yellow / Orange / Green / Brown. Answer: Orange. Orange is reserved for temporary traffic control in work zones. Yellow is for permanent general warnings.
  2. You see a ROAD WORK AHEAD sign but no workers. What the road work ahead sign means

The Road Work Ahead sign (MUTCD W20-1) is an orange diamond with black letters. In the U.S. system, orange means temporary traffic control: a work zone for construction, maintenance or utility work. This sign is usually the first one you see, placed well before the work area. A version with a distance, such as ROAD WORK 1000 FT or ROAD WORK 1/2 MILE, tells you how far away it is.

A sequence of orange signs usually follows — for example LEFT LANE CLOSED AHEAD, ONE LANE ROAD AHEAD or a flagger ahead sign — and the zone ends with an END ROAD WORK sign.

Test traps

Know the colors: orange = work zone, yellow = general warning, white = regulation. A trap answer says work zone rules apply only when workers are present. In fact, the work zone speed limit and other signs apply whenever they are posted, unless a sign states otherwise, such as WHEN WORKERS PRESENT or WHEN FLASHING. Many states also raise fines in work zones, often doubling them; check your state handbook for the exact rule.

Most people injured or killed in work zone crashes are drivers and passengers, not workers. Slowing down protects you as much as the crew.

Where you see it

You will see it on highways and city streets anywhere road crews are working: resurfacing, bridge repairs, utility work or tree trimming. Short-term or mobile work zones may use a truck with a flashing arrow board instead of fixed signs.
