Hospital Sign: What the Blue H Means for Drivers

The hospital sign is a blue square with a large white H. It is a service sign that shows the route to a nearby hospital, usually one with emergency care, often with an arrow or distance plaque. It gives information only: it does not change any traffic rule, and in a serious emergency calling 911 is usually safer than driving.

What the hospital sign means

The Hospital sign (MUTCD D9-2) is a blue square with a white border and a large white letter H. It belongs to the family of general service signs, which tell drivers where to find services. States decide which facilities qualify; in general, the sign is reserved for hospitals with emergency care available around the clock.

The sign is usually combined with a plaque: an arrow showing which way to turn, a distance such as 2 MILES, or, on freeways, a supplemental guide sign telling you which exit to take. A related service sign shows the Star of Life to indicate emergency medical services.

On the permit test, sign questions often turn on color. If you remember that blue means services, you can answer even if you have never seen the specific symbol. Do not confuse the hospital H with the white-on-green or black-on-white route signs. Remember too that hospital zones may have their own posted speed limits or quiet-zone rules; follow any regulatory sign you see.

Hospital sign FAQ

What does the blue H sign mean?

It means a hospital is nearby, usually one with emergency care. Follow the arrow or distance shown to get there.

Why are hospital signs blue?

Blue is the MUTCD color for motorist services, which include hospitals, gas, food, lodging and rest areas.

Can I speed or run a red light to get someone to the hospital?

No. Private vehicles must obey all traffic laws. For a serious emergency, call 911; an ambulance crew can start care and travel with emergency privileges.

Does every hospital get a hospital sign?

No. Each state sets the criteria, and signs generally point to hospitals that offer emergency care at all hours.

What should I do if an ambulance comes up behind me on the way to the hospital?

Pull to the right edge of the road and stop, staying clear of intersections, until it has passed. If you are in an intersection, clear it first. Do not follow the ambulance closely; many states set a minimum distance, often 500 feet.
