How the Rhode Island DMV permit test works

The Rhode Island knowledge test (the learner's permit test) has 40 multiple-choice questions. Every question comes from the official DMV handbook, the Rhode Island Driver's Manual.

The DMV's driver manual describes a computerized exam of 40 multiple-choice questions on traffic laws and rules of the road, with a 90-minute time limit.

Taken on a computer at DMV headquarters in Cranston, by reservation. Teens who take the 33-hour driver education course through CCRI take the DMV knowledge exam as part of that course.

If you fail, you must wait at least 8 days before taking the knowledge exam again.

Offered in English, Spanish and Portuguese.

Rhode Island learner's permit requirements

In Rhode Island you can apply for a learner's permit at 16. Applicants under 18 usually need a parent or guardian's consent.

Applicants aged 16 to 18 must complete an accredited 33-hour driver education course before the Limited Instruction Permit is issued; the course may be started before age 16.

Before the road test, teen drivers must hold the permit for at least 6 months. Supervised driving required: 50 hours, including 10 at night, certified by a notarized affidavit (drivers under 18). The supervising driver must be 21 or older and licensed for at least 5 years.

The DMV publishes the exact document list: check it before your appointment, especially if you want a REAL ID-compliant card.

Rhode Island graduated driver licensing (GDL)

After the learner stage and the road test, teens can get a provisional (intermediate) license from age 16½.

With a Limited Provisional License you may not drive alone from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. (work and emergency-service trips excepted), and for the first 12 months only one passenger under 21 is allowed, family excepted. A 17-year-old can move to a full license after 12 months on the provisional license with a clean record for the last 6 months.

Restrictions end and you hold a full, unrestricted license at 18, provided your record stays clean.
