Massachusetts learner's permit requirements
In Massachusetts you can apply for a learner's permit at 16. Applicants under 18 usually need a parent or guardian's consent.
Teens under 18 need a state-approved driver education course: 30 hours of classroom, 12 hours behind the wheel and 6 hours observing another student driver, plus a 2-hour class for a parent or guardian.
Before the road test, teen drivers must hold the permit for at least 6 months. Supervised driving required: 40 hours with a parent or guardian (30 hours if the teen also completes a driver skills development program).
- Proof of identity and date of birth (such as a birth certificate or passport).
- Your Social Security number, if you have one.
- Proof of Massachusetts residency.
- A vision screening and the knowledge test.
The RMV publishes the exact document list: check it before your appointment, especially if you want a REAL ID-compliant card.
Massachusetts graduated driver licensing (GDL)
After the learner stage and the road test, teens can get a provisional (intermediate) license from age 16½.
Junior operators may not drive from 12:30 a.m. to 5 a.m. unless a parent or guardian is with them. For the first 6 months they may not carry passengers under 18, other than immediate family, unless a licensed driver 21 or older with at least one year of experience sits in the front seat.
Restrictions end and you hold a full, unrestricted license at 18, provided your record stays clean.
Massachusetts rules worth knowing for the test
Signs and most rules are the same nationwide, but each state has its own laws — and the RMV test asks about them.
- Drivers under 18 may not use any mobile electronic device while driving, even hands-free; the only exception is reporting an emergency.
- Since February 23, 2020, drivers 18 and older may use a phone only in hands-free mode and may not hold it, even at red lights or stop signs.
- Learner's permit holders under 18 may not drive between midnight and 5 a.m. unless a licensed parent or guardian with at least one year of experience is with them.
- A first violation of the junior operator night or passenger limits brings a 60-day license suspension.
