Kentucky learner's permit requirements

In Kentucky you can apply for a learner's permit at 15. Applicants under 18 usually need a parent or guardian's consent.

Drivers who got their permit before 18 must complete an approved 4-hour Graduated Licensing Program (GLP) course, such as Alive at 25 or an approved high school course, before the full license.

Before the road test, teen drivers must hold the permit for at least 180 days. Supervised driving required: 60 hours, including 10 at night.

The KYTC publishes the exact document list: check it before your appointment, especially if you want a REAL ID-compliant card.

Kentucky graduated driver licensing (GDL)

After the learner stage and the road test, teens can get a provisional (intermediate) license from age 16.

Intermediate license holders under 18 may not drive between midnight and 6 a.m. without good cause, such as school, work or an emergency. They may carry no more than one unrelated passenger under 20 unless a driving instructor is in the car.

Restrictions end and you hold a full, unrestricted license at 17, provided your record stays clean.
