How the Indiana BMV permit test works
The Indiana knowledge test is a multiple-choice exam based on the official BMV handbook, the Indiana Driver's Manual. To pass you need at least 80% correct on each section.
The multiple-choice exam has two sections: traffic signs and traffic rules and laws.
A multiple-choice exam in two sections; a passing result stays valid for 180 days.
If you fail, you must wait until the next business day to take the exam again.
The BMV offers the knowledge exam in English, Spanish and many other languages, including American Sign Language.
Indiana learner's permit requirements
In Indiana you can apply for a learner's permit at 15. Applicants under 18 usually need a parent or guardian's consent.
A permit at 15 requires enrollment in a BMV-licensed driver education course (30 hours of classroom training and 6 hours behind the wheel). Without driver education, the permit age is 16 and the license age is 16 years and 270 days.
Before the road test, teen drivers must hold the permit for at least 180 days. Supervised driving required: 50 hours, including 10 at night.
- Proof of identity and date of birth (such as a birth certificate or passport).
- Your Social Security number, if you have one.
- Proof of Indiana residency.
- A vision screening and the knowledge test.
The BMV publishes the exact document list: check it before your appointment, especially if you want a REAL ID-compliant card.
Indiana graduated driver licensing (GDL)
After the learner stage and the road test, teens can get a provisional (intermediate) license from age 16.
For the first 180 days: no driving from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., and no passengers unless a licensed adult 25 or older (or a spouse 21 or older) is in the front seat; your children, siblings and spouse are allowed. After that, until 18: no driving after 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, before 5 a.m. on weekdays, or from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
Restrictions end and you hold a full, unrestricted license at 18, provided your record stays clean.
Indiana rules worth knowing for the test
Signs and most rules are the same nationwide, but each state has its own laws — and the BMV test asks about them.
- Drivers under 21 hold a probationary license, which expires 30 days after the 21st birthday.
- The 50-hour driving log is required even if you complete a driver education course.
- The night limits after the first 180 days do not apply when driving to or from work, a school activity or a religious event.
What the Indiana knowledge test covers
Topics follow the chapters of the BMV handbook. These are the ones asked most often:

- Speed limits in mph and the 3-second following rule: speed guide.
- Alcohol and drugs: the 0.08% BAC limit, zero tolerance under 21 and implied consent.
- Traffic signals and pavement markings, parking, passing, and sharing the road with cyclists, motorcycles and trucks.
