How the Delaware DMV permit test works

The Delaware knowledge test (the learner's permit test) has 32 multiple-choice questions, and to pass you need 26 correct answers out of 32 (about 81%). Every question comes from the official DMV handbook, the Delaware Driver Manual (July 2024).

Teens in the graduated license program take the written test through their certified driver education course or at the DMV; adults 18 and older take the eye, knowledge and road tests at the DMV.

Delaware learner's permit requirements

In Delaware you can apply for a learner's permit at 16. Applicants under 18 usually need a parent or guardian's consent.

Teens must pass a Delaware-certified driver education course and present the Driver Education Certificate (the blue certificate) to get the Level One Learner's Permit.

Before the road test, teen drivers must hold the permit for at least 12 months. Supervised driving required: 50 hours, including 10 at night, certified by the sponsor before any unsupervised driving (teens under 18).

The DMV publishes the exact document list: check it before your appointment, especially if you want a REAL ID-compliant card.

Delaware graduated driver licensing (GDL)

After the learner stage and the road test, teens can get a provisional (intermediate) license from age 16½.

During the first 6 months of the Level One permit the teen must always be supervised; after that, unsupervised driving is allowed from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. with only one passenger. The permit becomes a Class D license after 12 months of valid driving.

Restrictions end and you hold a full, unrestricted license at 17, provided your record stays clean.
