Try 5 Iowa permit test questions

  1. In Iowa, what is the legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit for drivers 21 and over? 0.02% / 0.05% / 0.08% / 0.10%. Answer: 0.08%. As in almost every state, the limit in Iowa is 0.08% for drivers 21 and over; 0.04% for commercial drivers, and zero tolerance under 21.
  2. A solid yellow line on your side of the center line means: Passing is allowed / Do not pass / Lane for turning only / Bicycle lane. Answer: Do not pass. A solid yellow line on your side means passing is not allowed. A broken line on your side means you may pass when it is safe.
  3. A round yellow sign with a black X and two R letters means: Road closed / Railroad crossing ahead / Rest area / Roundabout ahead. Answer: Railroad crossing ahead. This advance warning sign tells you a railroad crossing is ahead: slow down, look and listen, and be ready to stop.
  4. Two vehicles reach a 4-way stop at the same time. Which one goes first? The one on the left / The one on the right / The larger vehicle / The one going straight. Answer: The one on the right. At an all-way stop, the first to stop goes first. If two vehicles arrive together, the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right.
  5. What is the minimum safe following distance in good conditions? 1 second / 2 car lengths / 3 seconds / 100 feet. Answer: 3 seconds. Keep at least 3 seconds behind the vehicle ahead, and more in rain, at night, or behind trucks and motorcycles.

How the Iowa DOT permit test works

The Iowa knowledge test is a multiple-choice exam based on the official DOT handbook, the Iowa Driver's Manual. To pass you need 80% or higher.

Teens can take the knowledge test at an Iowa DOT driver's license location or county treasurer office, at home with a parent as proctor, or at a participating school.

Offered in English and 20 other languages, including Spanish, Arabic, Bosnian, Burmese, Somali and Vietnamese; an interpreter can be arranged by appointment for other languages.

Iowa learner's permit requirements

In Iowa you can apply for a learner's permit at 14. Applicants under 18 usually need a parent or guardian's consent.

Teens must complete an Iowa-approved driver education course before getting an intermediate license.

Before the road test, teen drivers must hold the permit for at least 12 months. Supervised driving required: 20 hours, including 2 between sunset and sunrise, before the intermediate license.

The DOT publishes the exact document list: check it before your appointment, especially if you want a REAL ID-compliant card.

Iowa graduated driver licensing (GDL)

After the learner stage and the road test, teens can get a provisional (intermediate) license from age 16.

Intermediate drivers may drive alone only between 5 a.m. and 12:30 a.m. unless a parent signs a waiver for school or work. If the license carries the passenger restriction, no more than one unrelated minor passenger is allowed for the first six months.

Restrictions end and you hold a full, unrestricted license at 17, provided your record stays clean.
